First, do divination and ask your extant spirits / gods if working with this spirit is something that should be undertaken. Don’t dive in head-first at the start merely because you are getting an inkling to work with a spirit.
Read the spirit’s myths & legends, and those of any relevant entities / spirits in stories which contain them. Learn, learn, learn about the spirit - especially within the specific culture you’ll be contacting them from. If the spirit existed over 3000 years, narrow down the timeline to specific myths and global locations upon which you’ll draw the gnosis for contacting them. Utilize academic primary sources, or articles / posts which list (quality) primary sources. If reading other witch’s gnosis, take it with a grain of salt (or avoid it entirely, so your experience is fully “yours” as it can be).
Once researched, ask your extant spirits / gods for their suggestions on how you should contact the spirit and go to it. It might be utilizing methods and tools you’re familiar with and have used for many years, or entirely new operating equipment & structures. Keep the tools & ritual structures within the culture & relative timeline the spirit was written about (eg: no plastic glitter wands when contacting a Djinn, no polyester fairy wings when contacting Odin’s Horse, etc).
Be graceful. Be tactful. Be kind. Move slowly. Don’t force anything. Give offerings even if contact is poor or no long-lasting relationship develops. Walk softly. Be respectful. Trust no-one / nothing. Seek triple & quadruple validation on every piece of gnosis you receive, and still understand that it might not work for anyone else. Utilize divination constantly to validate the information you received, and the spirit you’re contacting’s intention. Continue to seek the guidance of your extant spirits & gods to ensure that you should, indeed, be working with the spirit in question - and that relationships should continue as you move forward over time. Act with courage, but don’t mindlessly step into danger. Perform every act with deep sincerity.
Most of all: be gentle with yourself, the spirit, and your praxis.
